How a UK data-centre decommission actually runs

A UK data-centre decommission is not a skip day. Neighbour cages stay live. Power and cooling stay up until the last serial is labelled. RecyclicTech inventories first, isolates data-bearing media, de-racks in the window you actually have, and sends the lot sealed to Rădăuți. Certificates follow the serials. We will not sell you a “48-hour UK-wide decommission” that no hall has ever run.

Row of live UK racks — decommissioning happens beside neighbours, not after a site wipe

What to take from this page

  • Inventory before the first chassis moves.
  • Neighbour cages keep power. RecyclicTech does not cut a hall to save an hour.
  • Drives are a separate stream from sheet metal.
  • Time is scoped. It is not a marketing number.

On the floor

We agree the window with you and the colo operator. Serials are scanned. Data-bearing kit is bagged or caddied with its own label. Rails and bezels travel with the chassis when that preserves value. Empty U is not “job done”.

After the shutter

Sealed freight, declared depot, NIST SP 800-88, then test and grade. WEEE papers close the waste trail. A recycling ticket issued the same afternoon is not this process.

Questions

Straight answers.

How long does a data-centre decommission take?+

A cage can be a shift. A hall is a scoped programme. RecyclicTech will not print a fake nationwide SLA.

Can an entire data centre be decommissioned?+

Yes. The assessment splits live and dark halls. Live neighbours are a constraint, not a footnote.

Who removes the equipment?+

RecyclicTech labour on the floor. Road freight is a separate unpublished carrier until the legal name can be checked. Donate-portal couriers are not this job.

What happens to racks and UPS?+

They are inventoried. Reuse if they have a market. Otherwise WEEE-routed. They are not mixed into the drive stream.
